Impact of Compulsory Retirement on Your NPS Corpus

🚨 Key Insights from DoP&PW O.M. Dated 11.10.2024

On October 11, 2024, the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoP&PW) issued a crucial Office Memorandum detailing the effects of compulsory retirement, dismissal, or removal from Government service on the accumulated pension corpus under the National Pension System (NPS). Here’s what you need to know!

📝 Overview of the New Regulations

The DoP&PW has notified the Central Civil Services (Implementation of NPS) Rules, 2021, which govern service-related matters for Central Government employees under the NPS.

📜 Rule 18 Explained

Rule 18 specifically addresses the implications of compulsory retirement, dismissal, or removal on an employee’s accumulated pension corpus. Here’s the breakdown:

  • If a Central Government employee covered under the NPS is compulsorily retired, dismissed, or removed from service, their lump sum and annuity from the accumulated pension corpus will be paid out according to the regulations set by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).

💰 What Happens to Your Pension Corpus?

  • Payment Terms: Upon such separation, the payment will be made in line with the regulations applicable for subscribers exiting the NPS before reaching superannuation.

🔄 Continuing NPS Subscription

  • Your Choice: Even after compulsory retirement or dismissal, you have the option to continue contributing to the NPS as a non-Government subscriber using your existing Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN).

 ⚖️ Gratuity and Other Benefits

  • Important Note: The provisions outlined in this memorandum do not affect actions taken regarding gratuity and other retirement benefits not covered by these NPS rules. These benefits will be governed by existing regulations applicable to such entitlements.

 📣 What You Should Do

  • Stay Informed: It’s vital for all Central Government employees to understand these provisions and their implications on retirement benefits.
  • Consult HR: If you have any questions or concerns regarding how these changes may affect you, reach out to your HR department or pension advisory services for guidance.
